Moon Dog Love Tap Double Lager

Total Score: 6.55/10 Barley1 CutGrass1 Coriander1 Stein1

Those dastardly dogs at Lunar Canine have brewed up another mad-scientist beer, Double Lager? Double pants I say! Although this is only the second brew I’ve tried of theirs (the first being the insane 15.4% ABV American Double Imperial Stout “Jumping The Shark”) I already like the cut of their jib, and that is one crazy tasting jib!

Poured from a 330ml bottle into a Duvel tulip.

A: A nice cloudy amber body with a creamy off-white half centimetre head on top. Never had a “Double Lager” before, unless Peroni’s Gran Riserva Doppio Malto is one? Double Malt = Double Lager? Eh, who cares. 7/10.

S: Distinctly vinous, white wine grape on the nose, with a hint of malt grains, candi sugar, kiwi fruit and cut grass. This has to be one of the best Lagers my olfactory senses have had the good fortune to bewhiff! (time to ring OED with another word suggestion, they often tell me to keep em coming, or to stop calling them, one of those two). 10/10.

T: Distinctly not as expected! There is a big sugar hit upfront, grainy mid palate and it finishes with a cut grass/herbal hop bitterness. I’m missing that white grape/kiwi combo, i.e. the aroma is a lot more complex than the taste, not great but still interesting (despite it having less dimension here). 6/10.

M: Medium bodied, a little oily, with a light carbonation. 5/10.

D: There is a grating medicinal herb bitterness in the aftertaste that becomes more and more evident as the glass drains… it’s not an admirable quality in a beer. Disappointing because Moon Dog have some crazy ideas about brewing that I would like to endorse with a crazy big score. However the execution… indeed. 5/10.

Food match: A tongue scraper to get that aforementioned grating medicinal herb bitterness out of your mouth…or a plate of chilli fries.
