BrewDog Elvis Juice

Again with the grapefruit-juice-being-added-to-beers trend. I wouldn’t mind it so much if the grapefruit was an addition to the flavour profile but in all the grapefruit beers I’ve had so far the flavour of the hops is pretty much grapefruit and nothing else… maybe the grapefruit juice is distorting or overpowering the intended hop flavours? In any case even my favourite [thus far] IPA brewer Victory has made a grapefruit juice beer that has been OK and not much else. Time for BrewDog to step up to the grapefruit-coloured plate and hit that grapefruit-coloured ball (which is actually a grapefruit) out of the ball park.

Poured from a 330ml can into a nonic pint.

A: More hazed than hazed but not quite cloudy apricot-coloured body with a thin and splotchy off-white head… I’ve never seen a beer so almost cloudy but not at the same time before, kudos BrewDog? 8/10.

S: I like the cut of this beers jib (in the aroma sense). It has a quite a candied grapefruit/mandarin and orange starburst fragrance to it [who doesn’t love candied anything?]. Apart from this overwhelming sensation of confected citrus fruits that pulverise one with epic proportions* there is not much else to this aroma. Still it is pretty damn nice. 9/10.

T: The sweetness of the aroma is replaced here by a light floral dryness with a twist of grapefruit-at-the-end bitterness. It’s crisp/dry/moreish but does that cut mustard in this high powered world of transistors and robot sushi? The correct answer is: “There’s such a thing as robot sushi?”. No. It needs more of an amped up flavour to compete against US IPAs. Still the more I sip the more I enjoy – this is a good beer for those with BBF [Big Beer Fatigue, the other BBF]. 7/10.

M: Medium bodied with a dense, slightly fizzy, carbonation. It works for burps – I did 3 downing this one can. 8/10.

D: Not bad… not bad at all… actually enjoyed this more than the Sculpin IPA I just had/reviewed, but then I’m starting to get a bit of BBF on so a lighter flavoured IPA is a more pleasing experience for me right now. In the long run though nothing beats a nice brain-bruising IPA for a “Tasty Maximum Super Fun Time!!!” as they would say in Japan. 9/10.

Food match: Robot sushi.

*See how I avoided a candy-crushing lawsuit there? Thanks to my Thesaurus!
