Sierra Nevada Beer Camp Tropical IPA 2016, which we (as always with SN beers) have to abbreviate to: SNBCTIPA’16 – sounds like the name of a bounty hunter droid assassin from the Disney Wars franchise… anyway, I took a look at this and thought “Challenge accepted!” because let’s face it coming from an ANZAC country we have some of the most tropical fruit flavoured IPAs around, it will be interesting how SN competes (err, “compares”) with our tropical IPAs (Hop Zombie, Pirate Life or Tuatara DBL TBL anyone?).
Poured from a 355ml bottle into a nonic pint.
A: Presents a slightly hazed, let’s face facts: amber body, with an absolutely tiny 2 inch off-white head (that I think someone may have poured too aggressively *taps desk*) which eventually settles down to an inch before I gave up waiting and dived into… mea culpa on the head really. 8/10.
S: Aroma is full on papaya with some spicy piney hints, and I wouldn’t say “mango” (hey I live in Queensland – mango capital of the world – I’ve smelled a mango or three) like on the label, it’s more in the pineapple/jack fruit spectrum. Still pretty good as far as tropical notes go but it’s in the flavour where tropical hop concoctions usually go on the wayside. 8/10.
T: Flavour is juicy, full of pineapple and papaya (still no mango, but we’ll forgive it one label transgression, but you only get one SN!). Spicy and piney towards the finish with a reasonably easy IBU on the taste buds, and given the juicy/full hop attitude of this brew it is a welcome flavour profile – if only Kiwi brewers could bring this sort of flavour to the hop table. After taste brings out a hint of medicinal bitterness but otherwise it’s hard to fault this IPA. 9/10.
M: Medium bodied with an almost flat carbonation and plenty of hop oils milling around like a bunch of young punks – reminds me of Hop Hunter in this regard. Needs a bit more fizz. 7/10.
D: This is a rare delight of a brew from SN, I know SN are great but this limited release SNBCTIPA’16 is one of the better beers they’ve made, shame it will soon disappear from shelves. The more I sup on this brew the more I think that this is the flavour Hop Hunter should have instead of that grassy hop flavour they went with… oh well, if horses could be astronauts and other aphorisms I just made up on the spot – zucchinis and trouts hey? 9/10.
Food match: Asian, crank it all the way up to Thai!
