Total Score: 8.25/10
This one turned up as a surprise at DM’s (Dan Murphy’s). First I could have sworn I had reviewed this before. Second it was reasonably priced (we’re talking in Aussie terms here) at $18 a four pack. Third ABV was a stalwart 6.8% – right in that IPA meaty curve. And lastly [spoiler alert] it is really quite good. Now that we’ve got that out of the way you can proceed to my out of ten score and not bother reading the review [Yay for you!].
Poured from a 330ml bottle into a nonic pint.
A: Clear Society of Automotive Engineers amber (stay safe kids) body with an “OK I guess” half centimetre off-white head that settles down to thin blanket of odd-coloured snow on top. Seen better, seen worse, seen a duck with little ducklings crossing the street once (that was pretty cool). 7/10.
S: Piney hops – not too overbearing though – mingle with a smorgasbord of juicy fruit gum, pineapple and grapefruit. These are classic AIPA aromas and for an Australian brewer to nail it this well? They must have spent time Stateside. Aroma balance is slightly on the bitter side with sweetness playing caddy and offering club advice to the biting tones. Missing anything? Par for course here*. 8/10.
T: A finely perched balance in this brew, like a chamois on the brink on an alpine precipice. With dulcet sweet coming from pineapple and caramel malts, and that oh-so perfect foil of medium bitterness taking on a piney-grapefruit hue. Oh yeah and juicy fruit gum – you get exactly what the aroma promises in a smooth and tasty package. 8/10.
M: Definitely the aspect of this brew that was nailed with a medium to heavy body and a touch of resin oils with a light but sharp carbonation… body like this on an Australian brew? I know amiright?! 9/10.
D: It’s not “amazeballs” but it’s certainly up there with some of the most drinkable AIPAs I’ve imbibed, this includes actual American AIPAs here – this is one Aussie AIPA that lives up to the copycat name, great work Mash… keep on mashing (?)… [insert something Hawkeye would say both maudlin/witty]. 9/10.
Food match: Thai kickboxers versus Mexican wrestlers… err Thai or Mexican food.
*I’ve decided to see how many golf aphorisms I can cram into this review. PS: I hate golf.
