DAB Original

Total Score: 5.95/10 Barley1 Corn1 Honeycomb1 Stein1

I found this bad boy in a DM’s one day many, many, many (OK four) years ago in a white can with a fancy DAB 500ml Stein that is my second favourite Stein after my Löwenbräu 500ml Stein – which is only my favourite Stein because Löwenbräu means “Lion’s Brew” and my surname means “Lion”, plus the Löwenbräu logo rules… like a lion! Anyway back to DAB [Focus Doc!] aka Dortmunder Actien Brauerei is the last macro-brewer still operating in the city of Dortmund and progenitor of the beer style known as “Dormunder Lager”. As such this is probably the first time I’ve reviewed an original beer that is actually an “original” beer *cough*Hoegaarden*cough*.

Poured from a 330ml bottle into a DAB Stein.

A: Crystal clear pale golden body with a massive 1.5 inch foamy white head that holds up well. A noticeable amount of carbonation action happening in the glass. DAB harkens back to the days when beer had to be clear bodied. 7/10.

S: Grainy malt, a touch of honey, then hints of cut grass and vegetal matter. Nothing fantastic – just your average Adjunct Lager aromas going on. I must say if I had to do a line up with this, Oettinger, and a bunch of other cheap Lagers I would struggle to pick it out based on the aroma. 6/10.

T: Flavour is an anomalous mixture of grains, corn, sulphur, honey and white bread. It’s an odd one this, possibly a Dimethyl sulfide (DMS) batch, however it does have a saving grace in that there’s no metallic taste (common in almost all cheap Lagers). The finish is dry with a bready aftertaste. 6/10.

M: Mid to light, borderline medium bodied, with a soft carbonation (which is surprising given the carbonation action noted earlier). I liked the heavier than usual body for a Lager. 7/10.

D: DAB Original is a strange fish [It’s not a fish it’s a beer Doc!] give me a break it’s a figure of speech, haven’t you ever heard of euphemism? [Fine, let’s all surrender to the might of Doc’s vocabulary!*] In any case I found myself torn betwixt liking and disliking this brew – DAB still beats a stubbie of ‘Stralian Lagah (VB, et al.) however it is still clearly a modern half-assed cheap German Lager – if only DAB used its whole ass: Then they would have a winner here. 5/10.

Food match: If it has the word “wurst” in it then you sir, are on the right track.

*Who needs euphemism when we have sarcasm? Amiright?
