Before I begin this bruview: Oakham Ales Citra – if you haven’t tried it; Get it. Now. Ok, now that I’ve covered that off I am really excited about this brew, if you could colour me excited I would be a nice hazy jonquil (which is coincidentally the colour I gave of Oakham’s Citra in my earlier review of it). Note to self: The hop on this label looks like a real trouble-maker.
Poured from a 500ml (almost a pint but not really quite) bottle into a nonic pint.
A: Once again Oakham manage to present us with a really yellowish tinged (light amber) brew, not that I’m complaining, just wondering what the brewer is doing to give their Ales this yellow tint. There is a thin ring of white lace around the glass as well. 7/10.
S: Powerfully fruity and herbal fragrance, I would say passionfruit and cannabis (like the Citra), with an unmistakable hint of Starburst orange rounds out this hop driven perfume. Damn it smells fantastic, again Oakham are right on the money for hop aromas. 9/10.
T: The flavour is similar to Citra as well, in fact I believe this brew must be a more amped (ABV-wise) version of Citra… I could be wrong, but when has that happened? [careful with your words me] There’s that tropical passionfruit/Starburst orange/herbal note followed by a light toffee base and a tea tannin finish. It’s sublimely well-balanced, and fits perfectly in with my view of Oakham as old school English brewers with modern US techniques/flavours. An assertive bitter aftertaste however shows up and mars an otherwise perfect score. 9/10.
M: Medium bodied with a light but dense English pub carbonation. 8/10.
D: There was a big part of me that was hoping this would be exactly a bigger version of the fantastic Citra, and let’s face facts – the hop flower on the label appears similar, though more sinister, to the one on the Citra bottle – so I got exactly what I wanted… however it really is a difficult decision betwixt the two Oakham Ales, both are excellent, both taste similar, but there is one that is a touch too easy (the Citra), and one that is a touch too bitter (in the aftertaste). Being the difficult beer consumer/connoisseur that I am I wish Oakham had Ale with the same great taste that is juuuuuust right. Still this edges close to Beervana. 8/10.
